COMMUNITY OUTREACH
According to a study by WHO, racial and ethnic minorities receive the least amount of preventive care in the United States. Our Prevention & Educational Development programs address the persistent physical, social, and emotional well-being needs in the community. We strive to increase health and wellness at every age; from offering support to new mothers, to providing free Medical, Dental, Diabetes, Heart, Obesity, High Blood Pressure, and nutrition screenings, our evidence-based, preventive programs help improve the quality of life for community members.
A safe place for youth to gather out of school: through structured, targeted support services and opportunities for growth for children (grades 1 – 8). With the use of best practices and established learning standards, our programming promotes developmental assets that are the building blocks for healthy youth development, and center around: academic enrichment and support, interdisciplinary arts education, and life skills development.
HIV prevention, testing & counseling: conducts outreach, and performs HIV education, testing and counseling by certified staff. These services are provided to community members and persons throughout Houston area, ages 13-64, with rapid results in 20 minutes or less. The scope of these services is performed with sensitivity for each participant served and promotes positive self and cultural awareness to combat prevalent stigmatizations.
Mental health support for youth and families: provides research-based mental health preventive care for youths and Homeless in the community. Volunteers offer academic supports to children and youths who show evidence of behavioral, emotional and/or academic problems in the class setting. The program also delivers individualized and group parent counseling to reinforce the pivotal role of parent engagement with the child’s academic progress.
Assistance for expectant and new mothers: through educational, emotional, and social supports for vulnerable expectant mothers, and new mothers. Healthy Family Program: volunteers provide home visits and promote parent education with a focus on positive self-awareness and environmental preparedness.
Health and nutrition education for the community: through nutrition workshops, physical fitness activities and cooking classes; parent education and training; and health screenings. Programs are provided both on site and in the community partner site, our Fitness 4 Kids Health Fair, and other local events, and are designed to address prevention issues such as childhood obesity, health, and nutrition.
Health First Aid and Safety Prevention: training and certification in CPR, First Aide to help individuals identify, understand and respond to signs of cardiovascular disease, Shock, Choking and substance abuse disorders. Those complete certification as Health First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.
